This is not an authorized Simon and Simon site. My daughter and I are just fans who are talking about what we've seen. I'm sure the occasional image I borrow is fine, but please let me know if you have a copyright to an image and would like it removed.

The Secret of the Chrome Eagle Obits

220c.jpgA major plot point of "The Secret of the Chrome Eagle" revolves around an obituary found in the San Diego Herald. The antagonist, Eleanor Swayze, gets a recent edition of the paper while in prison in Louisiana. She reads the obit of her partner in crime Howard Chalfin. The director of Simon and Simon inserted a copy of the obit column of the paper. I made a copy of the image at left.

I'm an ex-newspaper editor. The indentation of the obit jumped out at me. It didn't match the other obits. I saw that every other obit had a date in late April 1971. The problem was the series was set in 1983. As the story progressed we find Howard had died "two weeks ago."

Obviously, some person on Simon and Simon was told to mock up an obituary column with Chalfin's name. I guess they could have made up all the names, but the 1971 dates made me wonder if they just inserted a name in a real column.

I didn't find the original column, but I know it was in a paper in the San Francisco area and that the majority of the obits were real. The exact names and dates are easily found in the California Death Records. I also found a mention of Mr. Twomey here.

I'm posting this in case any family members look for information about their ancestor. They might find it interesting to know their family members obit was nationally telecast 12 years after death.

About this site

The Sleuth Channel recently started showing the 80's P.I. show Simon and Simon. I was watching an episode when my daughter walked in and decided to stay. Now she's hooked. Each day we spend about 45 minutes sitting on the couch watching pulp television. She's learning the rules: bad guys vs. good guys, the good guys don't get killed, the bad guys never win. She laughs at the old clothes and the many bad jokes. Oh, and Marlowe the Dog is "so cute!"

This blog is primarily to track what we've seen, but you're welcome to join the fun. The show is on every weekday at 7 a.m., 11 a.m., and 5 p.m. (Eastern time) It's also on odd times weekends. We usually timeshift.

Warning: There might be spoilers in episode entries.

The two brothers are forced to take on the most dangerous cases, from the steamy intrigues of high society to the mystery of Mexican border towns." -- The Sleuth Channel series description

Here's our Episode List and the Sleuth Channel schedule for the rest of the month.
