2006 Indianapolis 500
I don't really watch auto racing, but each year I try to catch the Indianapolis 500. Memorial Day weekend and the 500 was always my father's favorite holiday. When he wasn't at Indy he was in his favorite chair watching the race.
It's tough for me to concentrate on the race through the memories of Dad, but I try not to scare my wife and daughter as I let slip a whoop or two.
This year a 19 year-old rookie almost won the race. With a couple of laps to go Marco Andretti passed his father Michael to take the lead and was passed at the last second to lose by .06 of a second to Sam Hornish Jr.
Just after the race Marco Andretti was interviewed about his feelings, "I almost won this thing. I don't want to wait until next year. I wish it was today." He might feel a little differently tomorrow about one thing he said, "Second's nothing." I think a 19 year-old finishing second at such a big race is a pretty big something.
