Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
In the following photo we see the an act of true American patriotism.
This protest of Attorney General Gonzales is a large part of what you can do to change your world. If you do not like something your government does in your name: say so. Simple acts speak volumes. Those 20+ students didn't need to scream to be heard. They didn't need cash to buy time on the nightly news. They painted a banner and turned their backs. Sure, the world wasn't changed in a moment by that act, but it was water for the seeds of dissent.
I don't have a photograph of it, but in 1991 a small group of us did something similar. That year the Kentucky Derby Pegasus Parade had Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf as the honorary Grand Marshal. As his float passed our section of seating we all held up newspapers. If it attracted his attention he didn't let on, but a whole section suddenly choosing to read the paper was noticed by the crowd and many of us were asked why we were protesting. It gave us an opening to explain our positions.
