Bull
In an article about the Washington Nomads: "No one in Montreal had any idea who we were," Schneider said. "You never saw Expos stuff on the streets."
Bull. Sure, in the last couple of years you didn't see a lot. That's understandable. For years MLB worked hard to force baseball out of Montreal. They called into question the commitment of the fans. No one would give the owners a free stadium. The solid citizens of Montreal weren't about to be blackmailed into giving welfare to millionaire owners. Good for them.
So MLB killed the team. Then announced they were forced to move the team since the fans wouldn't support their part-time team. The time was right for MLB owners. They had found a few suckers who promised the moon -- or at least a stadium with a retractable moon roof -- for the right to bleed money to MLB owners.
But Montreal supported the Expos. We knew who the players were. Ask Orlando Caberra which fans invited him to dinner. Ask the coaches about the young fans who stood on dugout rooftops to offer well-versed and statistically sound advice.
I won't watch the Nomads. Hell, I'll even cheer the Hated Braves when the two teams play.
But never say you didn't see Expos gear on the streets. I know I wasn't the only one buying those hats.
